![]() Literally.Ĭandi Thorn, better known as Skye, has spent her entire life resenting both her ridiculous name and the kooky mother who bestowed it. Richly woven, it’ll keep you guessing to the very last page. It’s a compelling mixture of nail-biting suspense and teen angst. The Hanging Girl, Eileen Cook’s latest edition, is no exception. Her stories are decidedly dark and unsettling, yet approachable. I wasn’t sure which was worse-to know you’re a liar or to believe your own bullshit.įor years, Eileen Cook has been my go-to for YA thrillers. Perhaps more drama, definitely more justice, but I think it's pretty perfect the way it is.īlog | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Youtube I'm sure some will want a different ending for The Hanging Girl. Skye was a strong enough narrator and didn't need a surprising conclusion to elevate her story - it was enough to wonder what would happen when the truth came out. To be honest, I think naturally suspicious readers will have no problem working out what is going on, but that didn't seem to matter for me. When things take a very unexpected turn, Skye must decide whether to reveal what she knows or continue the deception. However, it soon becomes obvious that Skye is involved more than she is letting on. So I'll be coy about it: When a pretty teenager goes missing, Skye tells the police of the psychic visions she has been having about the disappearance, offering clues to the missing girl's whereabouts. It happens only a third of the way in, but I still think it is better to experience it firsthand rather than being spoiled before. Kirkus and others reveal what I found to be a superb twist. If you haven't already, I don't recommend reading professional reviews for this book. I understood the lies she told - she created a fictional life for herself a fictional life she wished she had. I found it very easy to sympathize with her desire for something more than what she has. Skye's narrative was instantly engaging, showing her to be someone we might not be able to trust and someone willing to lie and manipulate to get what she wants. In The Hanging Girl, I was hooked pretty quickly. Her books seem to be flying relatively under the radar so far, but in both this book and With Malice, she’s demonstrated her talent for dragging me in and keeping me interested throughout the tale she is weaving. I think Eileen Cook is a real author to watch. They had a tendency to pop up when you least expected them. The bodies of your mistakes rarely stayed buried. Raskin exemplifies this idea most profoundly through the use of the character dossiers which Judge Ford compiles with the help of her partner in the game, Sandy McSouthers, and a private investigator. Just as following a promising clue often leads one to realize that one has only encountered a red herring, Raskin demonstrates how looking only at the surface of a person’s life in order to understand them often leads to a frustrating dead end. ![]() Once readers learn who the bomber is and who the bookie is, those categories become insufficient to hold all the complicated, disparate parts of each characters’ journey. In unseating her readers’ expectations of these reductive terms and easy categories, Raskin shows how the journey of uncovering who another person truly is can be just as exciting, complicated, and indeed frightful as solving a murder mystery. The “mistake” is Sydelle Pulaski, who was summoned to live in Sunset Towers along with the other heirs when she was confused with her sister Sybil-and though she is involved in the Westing game by accident, she proves one of its most deft, curious, and insightful players. ![]() The “bookie” is Jake Wexler, who feels unsatisfied by his lackluster profession and yearns for a way to prove himself to his critical, social-climbing wife. Isolated and afraid, she resorts to stealing the possessions of others in order to understand her new neighbors and feel closer to them. The “burglar” is Madame Hoo, a young immigrant from Hong Kong who is unable to communicate with her new neighbors. The “bomber” is Angela Wexler, who begins setting off fireworks in hopes of disfiguring herself so that the people who have told her all her life she’ll never amount to anything other than a beautiful wife will be forced to look beyond her face and discover who she truly is. Raskin unspools these secrets, revealing by the end of the novel who the bomber, the burglar, the bookie, and the mistake are-but by the time the narrative comes to a close, she’s also shown her readers that none of her characters can be defined by one simple thing. ![]() And, oh yes, one was a bookie, one was a burglar, one was a bomber, and one was a mistake.” With this, she frames the disparate people she’s introduced as complex, mysterious, and even threatening-the secrets they possess in spite of their fronts as “mothers and fathers and children” are deep and fraught. A dressmaker, a secretary, an inventor, a doctor, a judge. Raskin concludes the first chapter of the novel with the following passage: “Who were these people, these specially selected tenants? They were mothers and fathers and children. Thus, Raskin uses her main characters’ engagement in the titular Westing game-in which they must compete to solve Westing’s murder and win his inheritance money-to compare the complexity of a murder mystery to the complexity of the human spirit. Just as the work of solving a murder-like that of the wealthy Sam Westing-requires a combination of openness and suspicion as well as instinct and logic, understanding another person requires looking beyond the simple facts of their life and seeking to understand their histories, motivations, and imperfections. ![]() The most compelling mysteries, Raskin argues, are not related to scandal, intrigue, or crime, but to uncovering the truth of another person’s existence. By employing a classic murder-mystery structure, Ellen Raskin uses a plot full of intrigue to show how the individuals involved in the Westing game-and, by proxy, all individuals-are just as deep, unknowable, and complex as the complex trial at the heart of the novel. The Westing Game is a mystery novel-as such, the book contains numerous twists and turns, plentiful red herrings (clues intentionally designed to be misleading or distracting), sleights of hand, and seemingly random or useless clues which lead to an unexpected (and even profound) conclusion. ![]() There is no recoil anyway.and with the straight-through design of the stock, almost no muzzle rise as well. Muzzle brakes minimize these problems because by reducing the recoil of the. If your form is even a little off, what happens is the muzzle doesn't go straight up and down. Now even if you have perfect form and the muzzle is moving straight up and down, you also have to deal with the muzzle movement induced by your walking. Definitely something the average shooter can learn to do from a stationary position but throw in the movement and it is a whole new story. The rifle will recoil into your body, the muzzle will rise up ever so slightly and settle right back down onto where the sights were. If you use absolutely perfect form, then it won't matter whether you have a muzzle brake or flash hider. I also know that this drill highlights very well the usefulness of a muzzle brake because that is where I first noticed the difference myself. Now I can't speak to how useful that particular drill is for training combat skills but I do know that it is part of the MEUSOC qualification test for CQB with a carbine. Fire two to the -0 zone of each target and then 1 to the head of each target (in effect drawing a "box" with your muzzle". You start with two silhouette targets at 15 or 10yds. The 5.56 has so little recoil it's a moot point in combat I just hesitate to call it "tactical." After all, no one is shooting back. The 5.56 has so little recoil it's a moot point in combat - however, on a range, it can and will cause enough difference to make the difference. Maybe there could be an advantage, but the major improvement in flash suppressors adopted over the years was to close off the bottom vent - reducing dust kick up and exposing the shooters position. Maybe a few select large caliber snipers, but otherwise, saving night vision with a flash suppressor is considered more important. Look around, nobody issues muzzle brakes to soldiers. Muzzle brakes are a competitive range advantage as stated - for three gun fun. ![]() If firing burst three shot, shoot lower to compensate if you want - but that's why it's three round, the last shot is still 60% effective on the target. You have to relocate and target again, sometimes minutes later. It's shoot, move, communicate for both sides. OPFOR DON'T HANG AROUND TO GET SHOT AT AGAIN. Follow up shots are an admission of spraying and praying. Muzzle brakes do work - but a combat infantryman had better connect with his FIRST shot. They coincidentally could be made a size to fit a low powered rifle grenade - which aren't used anymore. Who can I believe these days? I sure the hell can't trust what I see on TV.įlash suppressors are to reduce the impact on the shooters eyes at night, and that's about all they do. I'm not going to question Denny’s business either. Even the crappiest dimsum here is still better than those at these dingy ID restaurants! I really dislike the notion that Chinese food in America has to be cheap and the restaurants dishing it out are usually dingy with suspicious carpeting (okay, this is the restaurant’s fault, but potentially forced by the low prices they sell their food at). So I’m glad I have moved back to Sg where good dimsum is everywhere. Sauteed sweet potato stems – I think my favourite of the lot.
